Personal Wellness Plan Introduction You always here goals about people wanting to lose weight. More often than not people are going to the gym to try and lose weight. There’s also those few people who want to put on weight. I happen to be one of those people. My goal is to gain 10 pounds of muscle by the time I start my next semester which would be August 22nd, putting me at 180lbs. This has been a goal of mine for a while, but I haven’t put it into action until now. There are a few reasons why I want to gain 10 pounds of muscle. First, I love to play the game of baseball and plan on playing sometime in college. Gaining 10 pounds of muscle would allow me to become a better overall player. I could improve my strength and speed, potentially allowing me to perform better. The reason I don’t play baseball now is because I tore my ACL. Gaining 10 pounds of muscle could decrease my chance of getting injured since I will have that extra muscle around my bones, joints, and ligaments. Another reason I want to gain 10 pounds of muscle, is to increase my over all athletic ability. Not only could it help me excel in baseball, but it could help me excel in other sports as well. It could also allow me to do things I haven’t been able to do before. Body Gaining 10 pounds of muscle could increase my overall strength. Question: Discuss about the Integration Strategy and Human Resource Management. Answer: Introduction: Human Resource Management or (HRM) is an organisational function dealing with the recruitment, management, training and development of the employees working in the organisation. Increasing globalisation has made people management more sophisticated and complicated as more number of corporations are becoming global. HRM deals with the management of people and hence it is least likely to converge between countries. It may not be easy to manage people in different countries using same HRM practices and policies. Irrespective of their origin, it is necessary to learn the successful HRM practices because of continuous globalisation (Boxall and Purcell 2011). This paper reviews the HRM practices operating Australia, US and Canada. The essay presents an overview of HRM in each country. The essay focuses on the three elements of HRM of recruitment selection, training and development and performance management. The essay provides a comparative analysis of these three elements of HRM between t he three selected countries as well as highlighting the issues related to culture. When dealing with employees from different cultures it is crucial to shape the cultural values of the organisation and motivating the employees. A literature review is performed to support the facts in the essay. This comparative study provides an understanding of how the HRM practices in three countries work and it highlights what it entails for the possibilities of learning from one another. In Australia, the HR managers make a recruiting plan to ensure recruitment of diverse pool of participants. Employees are allowed to participate by making referrals or interview. The line mangers disseminate the information about vacant positions to potentially qualified applicants both internally and externally abiding all the legal regulations. Based on the Hofstede analysis (detailed in Appendix) the culture in Australia is individualistic (McGraw 2014). The employees are expected to be self-reliant and take initiatives. However, the communication between the employees and the managers is open and free and to some extent people may have moral and cultural connections with their jobs. The hiring and selection procedure is based on the merit or on the experiences of the employees (what they have done and what they can do). Work culture is based on the shared values of the people, which is strive for the best and winners takes all (Jackson 2014). The superiors are always accessible t o the employees to address their needs. The managers are dependent on the individual employees for their expertise. The training and development of the staff is based on the competencies needed by them for achieving the organisational goals and to manage the personal differences such as race, ethnicity, age and gender (McGraw 2014). The HRM policy in US is defined by set of principles designed to solve a set of problems. These principles were developed by Taylor in 1964 in US after his pioneering study in the field of scientific management (Kaufman 2014). According to Taylor, for an organisation to be successful, both human skills and organisational competencies are essential (McLean and Budhwani 2016). Based on Hofstede analysis the culture in US is very individualistic (Kaufman 2014). People are goal oriented and the employees lack moral connections to their jobs. The managers of the organisation give high level of importance and preference to the knowledge than anything else. The US managers consider knowledge as an asset and highly knowledgeable people are rewarded for their contribution. The skills pyramid is presented as a large base with small top. The small group represented on the top posses high knowledge. The recruitment system in US is neither strongly based on the position nor on the career. The emp loyee selection criteria in US are based on previous experience and extensive interview. The training and development provided to the people is based on their needs and demands of the specific post. These factors form a basis of HRM model of US (Zeichner and Hollar 2016). The Canadas HRM model is strategic in nature. The HRM practices in Canada are largely linked to the strategic objectives. Based on Hofstede analysis the culture in Canada is very individualistic (Zeichner and Hollar 2016). The employees of this nation prefer and are autonomous. They exhibit self-control indecision-making and do not depend on external guidance for working. They tend to take initiatives with minimum supervision. The HR managers recruit employees either internally and externally. They recruit best personnel for the job using skills tests, talent acquisition programs, and by helping the applicants to get a right person for the job. Canada is a secular country and the HRM practices are not affected by the discriminations with respect to age, religion, race and caste. The recruitment system in Canada is strongly based on career. People are goal oriented and the employees lack moral connections to their jobs (McLean and Budhwani 2016). For any organisation preparing for globalisation, the most important factor it must focus on is culture. The term culture refers to the patterned ways of reacting, feeling and thinking which are acquired through socialisation and social learning (Weber et al. 2013). Culture means a set of cognitions that are shared by all or several groups of members in a society. Traditions and attached values are the core of culture. According to Hoftsted analysis the five dimensions to culture are Individualism, Power Distance, Masculinity/Femininity, Uncertainty Avoidance and Long Term Orientation (Hofstede 2011) (Appendix). HR managers need to deal with people from diverse cultural background. HRM should facilitate cross-cultural interactions for better results. HRM play a crucial role in shaping the cultural values of organisation. Lack of cross cultural interactions hampers relationships between people, motivational orientation, and attitudes towards workplace (Thomas and Peterson 2014). There fore, HRM practices should not ignore the cultural dimensions mentioned when globalising the operations to successfully achieve organisational objectives. The figure below depicts the difference in cultural dimensions between Australia, Canada and US. More or less all the three countries exhibit low context cultures that is individualistic with US being highly individualistic culture. Australia has high uncertainly avoidance followed by Canada and US (Taras et al. 2012). US has high power distance index followed by Canada and Australia. The culture of long-term orientation is high in Australia followed by US and then Canada (Chathoth et al. 2011) (See Appendix for Hofstedes cultural dimensions). HR managers play a vital role in recruitment and selection of competent staff for the organisation to make it more socially and environmentally responsible. Efficient decision-making is important which means HR should assign employees as per their talent. Their role is essential in the recruitment strategy, identifying potential gaps and setting the correct measures in the whole recruitment process (Buller and McEvoy 2012). Analysing the recruitment and selection element of HRM practice, it was found that in Australia and Canada people are recruited by advertising the job vacancies within either the government or open to the public. In all the three countries, employees are selected after recruitment if they meet the merit criteria such as the requirement of official language, essential qualifications for job, and others. The US firms highly prefer and recruits well educated and trained people having Go for it attitude. The recruitment system in Canada is strongly based on career whe reas in Australia it is neither strongly based on the position nor on the career (Grenier and Xue 2011). The hiring objectives in Canada and Australia are set at workforce availability levels for designated groups such as women, disabled, Aboriginals, and visible minorities (Teo et al. 2011). However, compared to US, in Canada and Australia, the recruitment policies are affected by the socio-cultural factors such as discrimination based on race, ethnicity and colour. Since the uncertainty avoidance index is higher in Australia than Canada and US, Australians may prefer clear cut job descriptions and responsibilities. It is necessary for the HR managers to create an inclusive and equitable work climate. It necessitates the need of performance assessment (Buciuniene and Kazlauskaite 2012). Assessing the staff performance, will help determine the level of performance management required in the organisation. Performance appraisals and reference checks are used to assess the merit criteria which is mainly performed for creating promotional opportunities (Brewster and Mayrhofer 2012). The analysis of performance assessment elements of HRM practice, showed that US firms offers bonus schemes to employees for their motivation. Few years ago US has introduced the skills auditing system. US firms have the tendency of evaluating the employees work only once in a year and have recently introduced the system of presenting newsletter (Teo et al. 2011). However, most of the Australian firms evaluate the work performance of the employees more than once a year. There is a low level of implementation of skills audi ting and offering bonus schemes in Australian firms (Stanton et al. 2010). The use of performance assessment in HR decisions in Canada is similar to US except that the assessment in Canada most of the firms focus on middle and senior managers and staff evaluation is performed twice a year. Canada offers performance related pay scheme that ranges from 15-39% of base salary (Akbari 2011). However, it is mainly offered to senior staff rather than all the employees as in US. This type of discrimination may add to high job attrition. HRM practices should support the employees addressing their needs and adding learning value. Therefore, the training and development practices of HRM include addressing the immediate concerns of the employees and reduce staff turnover. Getting a right person for the right job is not always sufficient. Employee motivation is essential to ensure a consistent performance with the long-term goals of the organisation. These practices are useful for narrowing skill gaps as well as for conducting career planning (Weber et al. 2013). Analysing the training and development element of HRM practice revealed that US and Canada practices conducting regular meetings between the employees and the senior managers for their training and development. These practices are being implemented for longer than the Australian firms. Australia had recently introduced the system of regular meetings between the employees and the senior managers. Australia has specialists available on call for ergonomic assessmen ts in workplace setting. These programs are designed for career development of the employees and enhance their skills-sets aligning with their respect goals (Edwards et al. 2014). In Australia the meetings are held only when every can one attend (Stanton et al. 2010). In US the companies provide training for employees on own cost benefits and does not depend on institutions to provide pressures. In US and Canada due to individualistic culture and employees being self interested in their pursuits, the training in these countries is viewed as means of building interpersonal and technical skills of employees (Buciuniene and Kazlauskaite 2012). Therefore, in tight labour market the individualistic employees find better positions using the newly acquired skills. Unlike in US both in Australia and in Canada training and development of staff is focused mainly on positions requiring mandatory training (Akbari 2011) It can be concluded that the US firms are more sophisticated than the Australian firms in terms of their HRM practices. In approaching the HRM practices, US value its employees as resources. It may be due to this sophisticated HRM practices (operationally) that US have stable environment with relatively less competitive atmosphere. Australia and Canada also have well established regulations for HRM but are less stringently implemented when compared to US. Various research papers also indicates that unlike US, both in Australia and Canada the HRM practices are influenced by the socio-cultural factors. However, the last decade had showed significant transition in the HRM practices and policies in both Australia and Canada with the help of government support. Overall, there is no vast difference of HRM practice in Australia and Canada but then both the countries are different from US in this context. Majority of the firms in Australia do not or have low level of implementation of the HR M practices and policies. There is a minute difference between the three countries with respect to cultural dimensions therefore; it is possible for Australia and Canada to adopt sophisticated HRM practices implemented in US. It is particularly recommended to the Australian managers to consider the HRM practices more thoroughly. Thomas Harris Thomas Harris is a man with many tallents, an a keen interest in writing. He earned a major in English, he has written for many newspapers and is most known for his second book which became a major motion picture earning 5 Academy Awards for Best Picture , Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Adapted Screen Play, Silence of the Lambs. Harris was born in Jackson Tennessee in 1940 He loved to read, he moved to Rich Mississippi at a young age so his father could persue a farming carrer. He got married but was divorced in the 1960's, by then he had one child. A daughter byt he name of Anne. At this point Harris moved to New York to became a writer for the Harold Tribune as a police reporter. He wrote minor articles for magazines. Though he found the police work to be boring it exposed him to the police enviironement which he uses in his novels. His first novel was wrote in 1975, it was about terrorists who use the Goodyear Blimp to try and bomb the Super Bowl. Harris and two other co-workers came up with the idea for the story but Harris took over and finished the novel. The novel became a succsesfull movie and a notional bestseller. Thomas devoted most of his time now to writing, he writes with such detail that it took him untill 1981 for him to release his next book. One of the reasons Harris' books do so well is because of his attention to detail, he spends many years reaserching a subject before he writes a novel about it. His second book, Red Dragon was the first book in a series of three phycological thrillers in which you are taken in to the mind of a killer known as Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter. The next book is by far his most famous and is titled "Silence of the Lambs". This novel is about an FBI agent trying to find a killer by the name of Buffalo Bill, she needs to crack open the mind of Hannibal Lecter in order to find him. His third book Hannibal,is about the hunt for the long time escaped killer Hannibal "the Cannible" Lecter. Harris now resided in many of his homes located in Rich Mississippi, Long Island NY, and Miami Flordia. We can also deduce that the woman was sexually constrained, since she was doing all the house chores an oppressed woman is stereotyped with; ‘She hastened out to gather them (the clothes) before the rain fell’. Chopin further affixes the idea of sexuality which had not been explored to a considerable extent in contemporary times. Women were taken to be as beings with no sexual desires and mere fulfillers of their partner’s yearnings. ... Despite all odds, Calixta made love out of the isolation she was pushed into and out of the love she possessed for a man, in the backdrop of the furious storm; ‘He looked down into her eyes and there was nothing for him to do but gather her lips in a kiss’. Chopin highlights the not-to-talk-of issue of female sexuality and very cleverly unties its knots from that of erotica. What may seem as an illicit lovemaking between two sensual creatures, actually veils the underlying meaning and feelings behind the act. At a time when her family was out in the furious storm, Calixta had taken refuge from the worry in the arms of an old-time lover. The concern had been such great that she went down with the flow of the presiding situation, disheveling her heart through her hidden desires. This clearly moves the reader to believe that women have desires too – and that was what actually Chopin had tried to convey. The sentence that ‘Calixta nervously began to gather up fr om the floor the lengths of a cotton sheet’ asserts that the air was tense and that Calixta’s nervousness had something to do with Alcee’s presence. Earlier everything was just ‘fine’ but after Alcee’s presence it became nervous. This, we may assume as Calixta’s effort to suppress feelings for Alcee, making her nervous. The character of Alcee is a representation of a decent man with natural desires. He had been forced to move inside the house of Calixta which he had not really desired, while the rain fell in sheets. ‘May I come over and wait on your gallery till the storm is over, Calixta?’ he had asked. True Cost of Mega-Retailers Essay The phenomenon of big box economics brings with several ethical concerns that taint its most favorable effect, that of bringing lower-priced goods to the American market. Whether manufacturers who produce these goods keep their factories on United States soil or abroad, many of the persons who work within them suffer under conditions that no American would be required to endure. On American soil, such workers (who are likely to be illegal immigrants) are often paid at the lowest rates possible, and along with this comes the lack of accompanying benefits, such as health or accident insurance (Mitchell, 36). Many manufacturers are often drawn to foreign soil because minimum wages are much lower in some countries, making the costs of production fall to a level that increases their profit margins significantly. Despite the fact that higher profit margins lead to greater overall taxes paid to the government, these practices do impact negatively on the American economy. One way in which this negative impact is felt is through the removal of jobs from the American arena into other countries. Many of these factories employ thousands of workers, and each of them represents one unemployed American that would otherwise be contributing to the overall national income (GDP) of the country. This negatively affects the unemployment rate within the country, and therefore counteracts the aforementioned positive benefits in the area of taxes by making it necessary for the government to pay out unemployment benefits. The employment of low-paid immigrants or the outsourcing of jobs also forces Americans to settle for lower wages, as any refusal to accept these would simply induce manufacturers to apply to the overabundance of these foreigners. This leads to a lower standard of living for Americans. One researcher has also shown that big-box retailers whose low-cost commodities put local retailers out of business also hurt the local banks, which traditionally have strong relationships with the small retailers (Mitchell, 42). In America’s banking crisis today, such retailers are likely to continue exacerbating the economic problem, making it that much more difficult for the economy to recover from recession. Size Does Matter â€Å"Back to School Extravaganza!!† â€Å"Store-Wide Clearance Sale: Buy 2 Pairs of Shoes and Get the third pair Half –Off!† Every inch of the walls inside the mall were plastered with a vast array of dazzling lights and colorful propaganda. It seemed as if I was going to suddenly be attacked by fearsome mannequins, who stood idly like a platoon of glaring soldiers, anticipating their command to strike. The congested food court had an aroma of boiling flesh, pungent enough to tickle the deepest hairs of my nostrils. With each step I took, I was met with an explosion of soul shivering sounds from the speakers, and flashy formed fonts that struck me at every glimpse of the banners. I was on a mission, and was forced to disregard all of the feeble advertising attempts that came my way. My objective was to finally acquire the legendary shoe that had eluded me many times before. As I marched on through the halls, I was distracted by an intense glow. Before long, I found myself gradually progressing toward the mystifying light. There it was, basking in its splendid wonder on an unreachable pedestal, a modern day Holy Grail. My thoughts were abruptly interrupted. â€Å"Welcome to Footaction. How may I help you?† I was instantly confronted by the typical, cheerful greeting I received upon entering any shoe establishment. â€Å"Yes I am looking for one shoe in particular,† I responded. â€Å"I need some brand new, fresh white Air Forces, about an eleven and a half to twelve.† â€Å"That is big, you know what they say about guys with big feet?... Yeah, they have big shoes! I’ll go see what we have available, and I’ll be right back,† she mumbled with a wide grin that grazed both corners of her bright red cheeks. Then she was off on the challenging quest at hand. As she disappeared momentarily, I held on to what little hope I had left of attaining those shoes. For so long they had narrowly escaped my eager, extended grasp. I was tired of wandering on journeys from store to store, just to end up in the â€Å"Land of ‘D’s:† Disappointment, Disdain, Distress, and Despair, with many other familiar pessimistic pedestrians along the way. Nayeli Munoz 01/15/13 Rap Most people are unfortunately misled as to what is rap music. Many people seem to have only heard commercial rap; commercial rap is â€Å"gangster rap†. Most of the commercial rap songs talk about getting money, gang banging, and some kind of explicit love or sex. Two examples of commercial rappers are â€Å"50 Cent† and â€Å"Soulja Boy†. True rappers have some kind of poetic flow. Real rap has a deep and meaningful topic, it is like poetry but with more emotion. â€Å"Tupac† and â€Å"Snoop Dogg† are two great examples of real rappers.A positive influence that rap has on today's youth is that it shows us what is going on in the real world; however, rap music can influence youth to be very violent. Another negative about rap is that it is very degrading towards young women. Through their music rap artist show a realistic picture of what is going on around them and how hard it was growing up in poverty. An example of this i s when â€Å"Tupac†, a famous rapper, in his song â€Å"Thug Mansion† says â€Å"picture me inside the misery of poverty, no man alive has ever witness struggles I survived†.Later on in the same song he continues with â€Å"seen the politicians ban us, they'd rather see us locked in chains, please explain why they cant stand us†. This song is reflects the issues of discrimination toward African American by the government. Rap has opened our eyes to show us the circumstances of poverty, drug use, violence, and how easy they can access guns. Rapper â€Å"Too Short† raps about the importance of staying in school and getting a good job.Rap influences youth to be very violent; in â€Å"Big Pun† song â€Å"Brave in the heart† he says, † I'm from where the guns love to introduce they self. Reduce your health little bulletproofs get felt. The street's a trip; either you deep or you sleep with the fish†. This song tries to tell us that we need to use violence in order to survive, this influences youth to believing that they do have to use violence and therefore they start being violent. Some rappers include new drugs that have not been very popular in their lyrics and when youth listen to it they get urious about the drug and want to learn about it and try it. Violent lyrics can influence youth to start fights or even kill people for what they want. Women in rap videos are usually degraded. Very often young women are laid out as sex tools or sex slaves. They are displayed with not much clothes on and they use their bodies to acquire material objects. Young women are exposed to these abominable videos and it can affect their health, their self-esteem can lower and they may think of themselves as useless and worthless.Research shows that many of the young women who listen and watch rap think that they cannot be successful without using their bodies. It is clear that rap can extremely influence today's youth bot h positive and negative ways; however, the negative effects are much larger than the positive effects. Lottery Ticket’

Nothing is more cold and neutral in the allotment of fates among a group of equals than with a random game of chance. No one is favored neither is anyone discriminated against. Everyone enjoys the same chances of winning the pot viz. ‘the Lottery Ticket’ by Anton Chekov, just as much as everyone shares the same degree of nervous apprehension from being chosen among the lot as part of a dark ritual viz. ‘the Lottery’, Shirley Jackson. Many men have squandered their lives and property to follow the fickle goddess of circumstances. Likewise, societies throughout history from across different cultures have oftentimes done away with the long process of rational thought and quiet contemplation for a decisively quick way to decide on issues: through an impartial lottery draw of lives across the board. When chance is allowed to determine the fates of men, the results are irrevocable and are not open to discussion or compromise. Once mathematical statistics have chosen the roll, the consequences have the effect of law. Its concomitant mandate is as good as the universe itself has already firmly spoken on the matter. Both the short stories dwell on the central idea of lottery but the angles by which the scheme of it is scrutinized are in the opposite extremes. In brief, Anton Chekov’s ‘the Lottery Ticket’ tells of the sharp, positive change in the outlook of Ivan Dmitritch and his wife who both led an otherwise enervated and disillusioned life (Chekov 88). They were both thrilled with the prospect of being able to afford a few luxuries in life by winning a hefty sum of money from the lottery (ibid.). Ivan begins to imagine the myriad ways to spend the prize money just as his wife was likewise animated at the thought of traveling to places and improving her lot in life (ibid.). It does not take long before Ivan realizes that it was his wife’s ticket and the entire money belonged to her. He foresees the hypothetical situation where she would have him on a leash. Thus, to dispel the unsavory possibility of being subrogated to the wife, Ivan reveals that the ticket was spurious and the combination did not match the winning number. All at once, bliss was replaced with ill-humor. The resentment for their lives has never been more sharply felt. They had a brief taste of bliss although temporarily. From then on nothing will be the same for them again (Chekov 89). On the other hand, Shirley Jackson’s ‘the Lottery’ takes away the ecstatic pleasure one feels in winning the lottery and replaces it with abject dread and horror.   Without going much into details, a group of people in a certain remote village adopted the brand of lottery which was designed to indiscriminately pick the name of a person, on a fixed time and location, to be subjected to public lynching (Jackson 12). The lottery draw is not something that everyone looks forward to every time it was being held. Instead, it is largely anticipated with fear and terror (Jackson 13). Although the tradition is highly unusual and cruel, people in this community continue to practice the ritual even after its neighboring villages stopped doing it altogether (ibid.). Their talismanic attachment to the lottery is left unexplained although one can draw the connection between symbolic barbarism of backward societies and unquestioned belief in tradition. Nevertheless, the people do not take alarm at the punishment because everyone is statistically equal with the other. Only Tessie Hutchinson seems to be complaining precisely because she was on the fore about to suffer the injury and the unjust penalty of death (Jackson 14). In the same vein, the tradition is perpetuated to the younger generation who were at the frontlines eagerly casting out stones from a pile they have previously prepared. Lottery has been around in human recorded history since time immemorial. Abraham who took charge of large plots of land settled disputes on ownership and patrimony through a simple and efficient method of drawing lots (King James Bible, Gen. 1.18-25). The principle of deciding by lottery is practiced up to the present time. It is generally adopted to resolve issues because of its appeal to fair justice (From Grandpa with Love, 2). The flipside to this argument is that everyone shares both justice and injustice equally. Shirley Jackson’s ‘the Lottery’ is an exposition of this principle in the negative end, whereas, Anton Chekov’s ‘the Lottery’ takes off from the notion that fair play sometimes breed resentment and jealousy by the one who is un-favored against those who are favored. As organized, this sentence implies that the scientist limited his doubts about air’s composition to the time he spent in Leeds, rather than stating that his suspicion began during his time there. To clarify the sentence, move the modifying phrase to the head of the sentence, and, for good measure, change the tense of the second verb, because air’s substantive nature has not changed since Priestley’s lifetime: â€Å"While he was at Leeds, Joseph Priestley began to suspect that air is not a simple substance.† 2. Because Europe is the noun immediately preceding the gloss, a reader might assume that the gloss defines Europe, rather than Protestantism, the correct subject of the definition. To eliminate that ambiguity, move the reference to the continent to the end of the sentence so that the definition is a mid-sentence parenthetical: â€Å"It was under these conditions that Protestantism, a branch of Christianity that declared public festivities sinful and vulgar and convinced large numbers of people that their lives should be spent on disciplined labor and worship, was introduced to Europe.† 3. This sentence is not egregiously incorrect, but the phrase beginning with according seems to modify country. It would be easier to read and the most essential information would effectively be reserved for the end of the sentence with the phrase inserted as a parenthetical: â€Å"He had accumulated millions of dollars there that, according to rules established after the war ended, couldn’t be taken out of the country.† 4. As constructed, this sentence implies that the writer and his brother had collaborated on drawing a belt, under which a number of books and comics were kept. The phrase â€Å"under my belt† should be shifted closer to the head of the sentence: â€Å"I already had under my belt a number of books and comics I had drawn with my brother.† 5. This painfully contracted sentence needs to be relaxed. The impetus to avoid a weak â€Å"to be† form of a verb is admirable, but it is awkward for that verb to be located at the very end, after a confusingly extensive subject. It would be better to immediately state the location of the list, then uncoil the tightly wound phrase identifying the subject of the list: â€Å"The following is a list of states with the highest rates of adults ages 18 or older who drove within the last year while under the influence of alcohol.† This is a rare instance in which the modifying phrase (in this case, the subject of the list) is more effectively placed at the end of the sentence, rather than inserted somewhere in its midst. According to Wardhaugh (2006, p.1), language standardization is the process whereby the language is â€Å"codified†. This process of codification of the language can be done by a number of ways such as the development of language, spelling books, dictionaries and at times even literature too. Elaborating upon this view, standardization of language encompasses presenting and storing the language in an official way so that this variety of the language can be given the status of the preferred and most accurate variety. Each language manifests itself in an array of varieties, and is essentially regarded as an aggregate of all these different varieties (Wardhaugh 2009, p.23). Hudson (1996, p.22) refers to the variety of language as t he â€Å"set of linguistic items with similar distribution†. He claims that Canadian English, London English and the English that is spoken in football commentaries are all a variety of the language English. ... For instance, for Ferguson (1971, p.30) a variety is a body compromising of human speech patterns and a large collection of elements and their organization which is able to function in any formal context of conversation and is adequately identical to be evaluated by the available methods of synchronic explanation. This follows that a complete homogeneity is not needed and there is always some variation on existence at which ever level language is interpreted, be it a dialect of the language or a group or the language as a whole. Language, when subjected to the process of standardization, starts to undergo a continuous progress with respect to this process. Standardization is not an ideology that has an impact on language in a particular era and then finishes to further have any effects on it as time progresses. On the contrary, the process of standardization is never a universal and complete process; rather it is in state of being enhanced and improved in the populations (Stein & Ost ade 1994, p.19). Standardization does not necessarily have the same impact on every language. It affects those languages more which are not only in use by the majority of the population but also encompass a sense of nationhood or the notion of a shared identity. OpenMRS Standalone should run fine for smaller installations (fewer than 10,000 patient records), but if you are setting up a larger installation, we recommend using the Enterprise installation. If you are not sure which makes sense, you can start with a standalone installation and migrate your data to the enterprise version later. OpenMRS Enterprise is appropriate for larger installations. If you already have a Java servlet container and a database installed, and you want to set up OpenMRS to use these resources, you should also use OpenMRS Enterprise. OpenMRS Standalone To install the standalone version, download the ZIP file and decompress it, then double-click the openmrs-standalone. jar file to run it. Romantic Nature Setting As I opened my eyes, I saw him laying there, still sleeping and exploring his deepest thoughts. The brisk morning air nibbled at my nose as the sun, just rising over the mountains, warmed my body. I leaned over and gave him a gentle kiss on his lips to wake him. He opened his eyes slowly and looked over at me with a smile. As he stroked the side of my face with his gentle hand, I felt this chocolate colored skin melt over me. After laying there holding each other in perfect silence, we decided to put our clothes on and go for a morning hike. We took off down a path covered softly with moss and tiny pink flowers. Off to the side of the path were endless green trees and pants all nestled together to make one beautiful piece of art. After a while, we reached a sparkling, clear brook. It was about twelve feet deep and nearly three feet deep. The path wound right along side the water. Down the brook a ways, we came to a deep water hole where the fish danced in the swirling current. I noticed the brook was beginning to flow a little faster now, and I could hear the steady, rushing noise of the water falling over the cliffs that lied ahead. We walked to the cliff's edge to look over at the crystal clear lagoon that lay below us. The falls dropped about thirty feet down before it met the pool of water below. To the sides of the waterfall were moss-covered rocks, ferns and other green plants, growing from the crevices of the cliffs. Vines weaved their way down from the trees that towered from on top of the rocks. We decided to take off and climb down towards the water pool. Following the trail, we lost sight of the waterfall for most of the time it took to climb down. As we neared the bottom, huge rocks at the edge of the waterfall blocked all view of it. Once the waterfall became visible, it was more beautiful that ever. From the bottom, we could see the vapors rising from where the falls bubbled into the pool. We could see the rainbow that was made from the sunlight shining through the mist. Since it was such a nice day, we decided to go for a swim.

â€Å"We are the Hollow Men, We are the stuffed men† In this poem by T. S. Elliot, he uses symbolism, mixed with a quick tempo at the beginning, moving to a slower one at the end to describe how a man’s life generally goes by. In the early stages of a man’s life, he is constantly being filled with information and qualities that society deems necessary and desirable. He will spend no time dwelling on the innermost insecurities that we, as humans, all have. He is a Hollow Man. As we go through the motions of life, we rarely spend time in our early years to contemplate and delve into the insecurities and emotions, the thoughts and feelings that make us who we are. We are content being ignorant to the deeper things; the things that make us think about the greater workings of the Universe, and the smaller workings of ourselves. We know those things exist; we simply don’t want to hear them, because, as we’ve all heard at one time or another, ignorance is bliss. â€Å"Eyes I dare not meet in dreams† As we move further into the journey of life, we begin to understand that something is missing. We begin to come to the realization that there are things about ourselves we don’t want to know. We are ashamed that we have gone this long, and have not sought out the greater meaning we inherently know is there. We know we’ve done wrong, but don’t want to face it. We fear what we will discover about ourselves. It is easier to look in a mirror and see your reflection just as being your reflection, and not contemplate the person you see. It is easy to say â€Å"This person has blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. † It is difficult to say â€Å"This person has feelings, beliefs, insecurities, and a deeper meaning. â€Å"At the hour when we are Trembling with tenderness Lips that would kiss Form prayers to broken stone. † This stanza represents how at the end, we know that our lives of passion, where we have done nothing for a greater purpose than for our own personal comfort and entertainment, were insignificant. We know, maybe for the first time, that there was more to living than just existing. We know that we are nothing, and that we have nothing. We know that we are coming to the end, and we are willing to do anything to keep that end from coming. We pray, and beg, and plead, just wanting a chance to have done something truly worthwhile. â€Å"This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends This is the way the world ends Not with a bang, but a whimper. † When that final end comes, it will not be in some grand event of chaos and hellfire, It will be much worse. It will be a personal revelation that what you have done did not matter. It will come as a quiet, internal battle, with nobody there to console you but yourself. You will have to face your life with a new sense of understanding that only comes with the end.

The darkness closed in over her. She could feel it getting nearer. Every breath a vicious flash back of her life. â€Å"Don't hurt me,† she sobbed. â€Å"Please don't hurt me†. Still he came, closing in on her. The silence was deadly. She huddled against the cold, damp wall, paralysed with fear. She thought that if she moved he would easily find her, but it was useless, he knew where she was anyway. She tried closing her eyes and block out thoughts of what he would do, willing herself to disappear. There was no escape now. She was stuck, watching him draw nearer, if she closed her eyes, visions would appear. Horrible visions of him committing the deadly crime. Over and over in her mind, she could see herself being killed and lying dead on the dark floor of the secluded warehouse. â€Å"No!† she screamed. Eyes wide open. She couldn't believe it. She was alive. He was gone. It had changed, there was no longer the dripping pipes or piled boxes of the warehouse. Instead, she found herself in a green field, daisies and rabbits everywhere. She was stunned, suddenly the terrible death scene had transformed into something completely different. Something she liked. The sun was setting over the hills, the gentle breeze caressing her face. She sat on a soft patch of heather and sighed. Turning to see the view, everything disappeared from her line of sight and all she saw was rubble flying everywhere. An earthquake, maybe, or a bomb. She crouched down to dodge the rocks that were falling like rain. Then she felt the rocks start to disintegrate beneath her. She started to panic. What was happening? She fell and landed on something soft. It looked familiar, where was she? â€Å"I know this place,† she whispered to herself. She felt soft flooring underneath the soles of her bare feet. Reaching down with her hand, she touched a rug. Her rug. She was back in her room. But something was different. Something was missing. Light. Everything was in darkness and the atmosphere was eerie. Something wasn't quite right. She tried closing her eyes tight again, imagined she was somewhere else. Hoping that when she opened her eyes again, everything would be okay. But things don't work that way. Horror struck as she realised she couldn't open her eyes. â€Å"I can't open my eyes!† she screamed, running into the wall. She desperately clawed at her eyes but to no avail. Then ‘POP!' Her ears popped and she lost all sense of hearing. Deaf, blind, it can't get any worse! Could it? Just as she thought it was the end, the vision of her home faded into sight. Taking a deep breath, she stepped into the hallway. Smiling as she recognised each and every familiar crack in the paintwork. Her dads' handiwork. â€Å"Ahem.† She spun round to face a police officer. â€Å"And what are you doing here young lady?† he said in an immaculate British accent. â€Å"I†¦I live here† she stammered. â€Å"Preposterous!† cried the police officer. â€Å"You can't live here!† close to tears, she looked him in the eye and said. â€Å"Why not?† Just as the police officer was about to answer, her little brother stared at her in shock from behind him. His face completely drained of colour. He gulped and said â€Å"Officer, tell me you can see her too.† What was going on? Had he gone crazy? Was something going on in his warped 14 year old mind? What could he possibly mean by that? â€Å"Yes I see her. What a strange thing to ask. She obviously there, I mean†¦Ã¢â‚¬  he stopped dead in his tracks. â€Å"Oh goodness. Is that†¦?† her brother nodded slowly, hardly believing it himself. â€Å"But that's impossible!† exclaimed the police officer. â€Å"How can it be?† â€Å"How can what be?† she asked. â€Å"What's going on?† she stared at her brother, waiting for him to answer. â€Å"You're dead.† It was so simple. Amazing what two little words could do. She couldn't believe her ears. â€Å"I'm what?† she whispered. â€Å"You're dead sis. But then, how come I can see you? Are you like†¦some kind of spirit now? A ghost?† she stared blankly at him. He stared expectantly back into her eyes. Amidst the silence, the police officer crept away. â€Å"I†¦I don't know.† She said. â€Å"Am I†¦Am I dreaming?† she stammered. Confused, she held her heavy head in her hands. Her eyes rolled into her head and colours swirled in her mind. She felt as light as air. Just like a ghost! She looked at her hands and she could see her brothers' horrified face through them. â€Å"Delise?† he cried her name. She was too shocked to speak as she faded away into nothingness, or so her brother thought. She found herself in a beautiful, peaceful garden, full of tulips, her favourite. There was a sparkling pond with a weeping willow hanging over it providing some cool shade. She couldn't help but relax and it felt so good. There was a tall, young man standing in the middle of it, she wondered how she had not noticed him until just now. â€Å"Delise Patterson,† he smiled. â€Å"I've been expecting you† â€Å"I'm dead,† was all she could say. â€Å"No people never die, you are not a ghost, you are a person. That body was your ghost. Now you are free of it. Now you are nothing but yourself, like it was meant to be.† He smiled warmly at her but she didn't return it. â€Å"I have to go back! I want to go back!† she cried. â€Å"Why would you want to return to a place where you can feel pain, where you can get hurt, where you can hurt others?† he asked, â€Å"This is paradise.† â€Å"I was murdered! Please show me how to go back!† she screamed. â€Å"Why do you want to go back?† he repeated the question patiently. â€Å"I have to find the bastard who killed me!† she screamed angrily. â€Å"No!† he flared out. â€Å"I'm not letting you get away! Not again, not ever.† â€Å"Get away again?† she said to herself. What could he mean again? Have they met before? Impossible. She was sure she could recognise a face like that. Beautiful, yet twisted. Charming, yet deceptive. Cocky, yet hesitant. â€Å"Never again will I let you escape. My whole life spent searching for something, and in a matter of seconds, it's gone. She's gone. You, were gone.† He said, close to tears. Delise could sense that if she didn't do anything soon, he'd be sobbing uncontrollably and she'd never get out. She'd never go back. Back home. But she needed to get back to take her wicked revenge. â€Å"Please stop crying. I†¦I will come back.† But he still wept. Delise was starting to get irritated. â€Å"Come on don't be pathetic, what do you mean you won't let me go again?† â€Å"You don't recognise me do you?† he said through tears. â€Å"Why should I?† she asked, puzzled. â€Å"How can I recognise you if I don't know who you are?† â€Å"But you DO know me. You DO!† he cried. â€Å"How can you not recognise your own brother?† Silence. â€Å"Tim?† she whispered. â€Å"Yes,† he whispered back. â€Å"Tim.† He didn't know why he did that. Lied to her. He guessed Tim was her brother. He'd change his name to Tim now. Yes. Tim. â€Å"You look so different.† She said stunned. â€Å"Tim. If you love me, you will let me go back. Don't you want the person who murdered me to get what they deserve? She sobbed. â€Å"You're not dead.† He said. â€Å"How many times do I need to tell you? You're not dead!† he paused. How could he come up with a believable reason? â€Å"I took you here to be†¦safe.† Delise stared in disbelief. â€Å"I didn't want you to get hurt.† He said. â€Å"Hurt?† she questioned. â€Å"Yes. Hurt. Hurt by†¦me.† â€Å"What? But you're my brother! Why would you hurt me?† she cried. â€Å"I'm not your brother and you can't leave. I have to protect you from him.† â€Å"This is crazy.† She said. â€Å"I'm protecting you from him, the guy in the sky, the man upstairs, GOD.† â€Å"What? I'd rather be dead than stay here with you, you psycho.† â€Å"Oh no you don't.† he muttered. â€Å"Nobody stands up to me and gets away with it!† he screamed. â€Å"I am the most powerful being there is! Fear me mortal!† â€Å"DELISE!† she heard a man's voice. â€Å"Don't look into his eyes! It's Satan!† Satan? She knew she was in real trouble now. Clamping her eyes shut she screamed for help. Nobody came. The darkness closed in over her. She could feel it getting nearer. Every breath a vicious flash back of her life†¦ She felt dizzy. Exhausted and sick. Ill with confusion. Fatigued, she fell into a deep sleep. * * * * * Delise awoke to the sound of humming. A mellifluous tune. Calming and dreamy. She hummed along as if she knew the tune all her life. Smiling, she sat up. Beside her, a man in his early twenties aroused, dazed. Not the man she met in the garden, he was too peaceful to be evil. â€Å"Delise,† he whispered. â€Å"Is it really you?† â€Å"Yes.† She whispered back. â€Å"Who are you?† â€Å"Tim.† He smiled. Truth in his eyes. Eyes that have seen too much. Eyes like Delise's. â€Å"It's really you this time, I can tell.† She said. â€Å"Oh Tim!† she cried as she threw her arms around him. â€Å"I won't ever leave you again.† Tim's eyes started to fill with tears â€Å"That day†¦when the house was burgled and mum and dad†¦well you know†¦where did you go?† he whispered between sobs. â€Å"You just sort of†¦faded out of sight. All those years I thought you were dead.† He sobbed. â€Å"I'm sorry Tim.† She really was. â€Å"I was so alone! My friends turned on me. They called me an unwanted orphan. So long, Delise, too long.† â€Å"Do they still†¦Ã¢â‚¬  she couldn't think of what to say. â€Å"Bully me? Call me names? No.† He said. â€Å"Never again. I am forever rid of them. The world is forever rid of them.† Her eyes widened in shock. â€Å"Oh Tim you didn't did you? Oh please say it's not true!† she wept hysterically. Without waiting for his answer, she ran. She ran for what seemed like forever until she was out of breath. Panting, she rested her pounding head on the cool wall of the dimly lit corridor. By now, she was sobbing uncontrollably, she couldn't, wouldn't believe it. Her little brother? He's a†¦she couldn't bring herself to even think the word. Suddenly, she froze. Footsteps. Behind her. She waited. Still the footsteps drew nearer, ever closer, the pace matching that of her hearts'. Spinning round, she searched for the eyes of her stalker. There was no one there. â€Å"Delise.† Said a voice behind her. She gasped in horror. â€Å"Murderer.† Whispered Delise. â€Å"Delise, you need to understand, I had to do it. There was no other option.† â€Å"No other option.† Said Delise coolly. â€Å"No other option!† she turned on him, pushing and shoving, wrapping her slender but strong arms around his dark neck. â€Å"Don't give me that you little piece of shit! I'm ashamed of you Tim. You are a disgrace.† She hissed. â€Å"It was either them or me. Satan is in charge of the world now and he controls everything. There's no escape Delise. He's even watching us right now. He makes people fight for his fun, but there's no loser until someone dies. They had to die.† Still hitting him, but now more feebly, she wept. She wept for her brother, she wept for those he killed, but more than anything, she wept for herself as she saw an image play in her mind. She was standing, covered in blood. Someone else's blood. â€Å"This is it. You ready?† sneered a woman also covered in blood. Delise glared hard at her. â€Å"You look just like my mother. I'm home† she spat back. Screaming, the anonymous woman ran at her dagger at the ready. Barbarically, Delise mirrored her actions but was a split second too late. The cold metal touched her skin seductively before breaking the skin, scraping her ribcage, piercing her already broken heart. Eyes wide open; Delise didn't even have a chance to scream. The taste of fresh blood in her dry mouth, gushing out onto the sandy floor. A stinging mixture of blood, sweat and tears as she realised this was no vision. She fell forwards, pushing the dagger all the way through so that it protruded her back. The darkness closed in over her. She could feel it getting nearer. Every breath a vicious flash back of her life. Closing her eyes, she let herself drift into sleep, never to wake again.
